For many of us, protective styles like braids, twists, locs, and cornrows are more than just a way to switch up our look—they are deeply rooted in history, culture, and the health of our hair.
As I’ve studied the history behind these styles, I’ve come to appreciate just how much our ancestors used their hair as a form of identity, resistance, and survival. From the elaborate braiding traditions of West Africa to the spiritual symbolism of locs in Ethiopia, protective styles have always been about more than just beauty.
Today, we continue to wear these styles with pride, keeping our hair healthy and thriving—but only if we care for them properly. Let’s take a deep dive into the past and uncover the real power of protective styles.
Protective styles go back thousands of years. In many African civilizations, hair was a symbol of status, heritage, and even communication. For example:
🔹 Cornrows and braids told stories—specific patterns could indicate a tribe, age, or even social rank.
🔹 Locs in Ethiopian and Rastafarian traditions have long been a symbol of spiritual strength and devotion.
🔹 During slavery, braids became a means of survival—enslaved Africans used them to map out escape routes and even hide rice and seeds to sustain themselves.
This history isn’t just interesting—it’s empowering. Knowing that our hair holds such significance makes wearing protective styles today even more meaningful.
While protective styles honor our roots, they also help protect our strands from daily wear and tear. But the key is moisture and maintenance—because a protective style isn’t truly “protective” if your hair dries out and breaks underneath.
Here’s how these styles benefit your hair—and how you can keep them healthy:
✅ Less Breakage: Reduces constant combing and manipulation.
✅ Locks in Moisture: Keeps hydration sealed into your strands.
✅ Prevents Split Ends: Shields hair from heat, friction, and weather.
✅ Encourages Growth: Gives your hair a break so it can flourish.
🚨 But here’s the catch: If your style is too tight or left in too long, it can cause more harm than good (ever had a style so tight you could barely sleep? Yeah, that’s NOT it! 😩).
Also, keeping your scalp and hair hydrated is a must. And that’s where the right products come in.
🔥 The Tonic – "Give Your Hair a Drink!"
Keeping hair hydrated is the #1 rule of protective styling. The Tonic is a lightweight, all-purpose spray that moisturizes and refreshes braids, twists, and locs—without buildup.
✨ Curly Cocktail – The Perfect Twist-Out Companion
If you love braid-outs or twist-outs, Curly Cocktail is your best friend. It adds moisture and shine while defining curls when you take your style down.
💦 The Finishing Oil – Lightweight & Nourishing
For a final touch of scalp and hair nourishment, a few drops of The Finishing Oil seal in moisture without weighing hair down.
Remember: Moisturized hair is healthy hair—whether it’s in braids, locs, or twists. Keeping your crown hydrated and protected is the key to long-lasting, damage-free styles.
Now that we’ve talked about the history and benefits of protective styles, let’s hear from YOU!

My favorite protective hairstyle is braids because it is a very versatile hairstyle. I can wear braids in many different ways for a good amount of time without over manipulating my own hair too much. I can keep it fresh by using The Tonic spray and oiling my scalp often with the Finishing Oil that you can find in the shop.
